It is a known fact, there has been a growing demand for nurses specialized in the ‘geriatric’ stream. A ‘Geriatric’ or a ‘Gerontological’ nurse, is a kind of nurse, who takes care of and provides support to elderly people. A geriatric nurse, is someone who has learned the traditional nursing ways, along with which has special training in having better understanding of the needs of elderly individuals and to take care of those need in a warm manner.
The demand for Gerontological nurses has increased rapidly due to the increase in the number of people entering a retirement age and old age globally. The population of older adults are expected to reach 21.7% of the total population by 2040 and this expectation indicates that this field will continue to grow, and geriatric nursing is bound to be an integral part of the world by then.
Why Gerontological/ Geriatric Nursing?
Studies indicate that in countries like Canada, one in seven Senior citizens receive or opt for home care. Many hospitals and healthcare centers give them more preference than the younger people and this calls more healthcare workers to the field of Geriatrics. Gerontological nurses are much preferred globally due to their expertise in this medical area and they have more scope, with the rise in the number of people growing old in various countries. These nurses are needed to take care for a growing number of elderly patients.
Responsibilities of Geriatric Nurses
Taking care of a larger number of patients who are elderly adults is not a simple task and hence, this profession too, comes with major responsibilities, of which a few are:
- Assistance while working with a team of physicians and other healthcare workers.
- Ensuring regular check-ups
- Measuring and recording vital signs regularly
- Helping with daily needs of the elderly patients
- Maintaining accurate patients’ records
- Advocating for the health of elderly people
Geriatrics or Gerontology requires the nurses to take care of senior citizens of the country. Here, the care required is different because of ageing, due to chronic health related diseases that could follow with ageing, like diabetes, and finally, due to the requirement of complex healthcare needs that may arise, in the field.
Scope of Geriatric Nursing/ Nurses
With the growing demand for geriatric nurses in countries like UK and Canada, more nurses in this field of health care are preferred for taking care of ageing people. Geriatric nurses can work in various hospitals, health care centers and clinics in countries like UK and Canada. They also can work in residential care facilities which include nursing homes and retirement communities, while some geriatric nurses prefer to work in home healthcare settings as well.
Gerontological nurses make sure that ageing or elderly patients are met with extreme care and warmth. They are the important professionals needed in the field of Geriatrics and are often welcomed with warmth in most of the countries. A wider vista of opportunities are awaiting Geriatric nurses, mostly in countries like UK, Canada and Germany.
