IELTS Academic is to test whether the candidate’s English proficiency is suitable for educational environment, hence this is for candidates who are applying abroad for higher education.
IELTS General Training is for those who wishes to go abroad for work, secondary education or for any training programs. It tests the candidate’s English proficiency needed for practical communication in the social and workplace context. This test is widely considered for immigration to major countries.
There is another IELTS test called the IELTS Life Skills. The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) requires proof of proficiency in English speaking and listening skills and IELTS Life Skills helps with this. This English test is often used for:

- for extending visa

- for citizenship.
Since, this test is for the immigration purposes only, IELTS Life Skills does not have Reading and Writing, but has Speaking and Listening.
IELTS Life Skills has levels A1, A2 or B, with Level A1 and A2 having two parts and the B1 level having three parts.
IELTS; British Council and IDP
The British Council and International Development Program-IDP Australia, both conduct Language Proficiency test which is compiled by the Cambridge English Language Assessment.
Both the British Council and the IDP are owners of IELTS and there’s no difference in the contents of the IELTS exam they both conducts. The difference between the two is with the number of venues these two offers for conducting the IELTS exams. In India, with more number of locations, IDP has more test dates and well-equipped centres than the British Council. Hence, there is no difference the content, marking and the qualification between the IELTS offered by the British Council and the IDP and one can choose from the two according to their convenience.

The interests of many aspiring candidates wanting to go abroad for various needs has decreased as the fears of pandemic has affected the world adversely. The major change this pandemic has brought with regards to IELTS, is that these days, the exam is being conducted online.
Initially, various qualification examinations including the IELTS, are paused due to the issues this pandemic has caused. Although IELTS is now open in more than 80 countries, there are countries where these examinations stand suspended. Along with the other educational courses that are now made online, the IELTS coaching and preparation classes are too available online, providing the interested candidates a chance to study and appear the exams, despite having a fear of the pandemic around.
